One man is dead, and another missing, after a boating accident roughly 30 kilometres from Kimmirut, Nunavut.

Local search coordinator Rosie Akavak said the two men were out looking for soapstone, when their boat struck an object near Big Island (Qikiqtarjuaq) on Friday morning.

Search crews, which included resources from Ontario’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, looked for the two men by air and sea, according to Nunavut RCMP inspector Denis Lambe.

They found the body of a man in his mid-twenties.

As for the man who’s yet to be located, Lambe said they’ve called off the search and filed a missing person report.

He said they’re withholding the identities of the two men while their families are consulted.
