Over 150 golfers tee off at 2024 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship

His eagle on 18 led to a four-under round to take the top spot after the early tee-time golfers returned to the clubhouse.

Over 150 golfers hit the tee for Round 1 of the championship Thursday at the Saugeen Golf Club.

The list of participating golfers at the event includes Kevin Vandenberg from New York who was the 2023 senior amateur of the year in the United States, former PGA tour players Todd Fanning from Winnipeg and Ashley Chinner from Oshawa, as well as former NHLer Adam Creighton from Port Colborne.

The championship kicked off Wednesday evening with the opening ceremonies following a practice round.

In a media release, Saugeen Golf Club Board President Derek Alstein said he was excited to welcome all the players from across Canada and around the world to Saugeen Golf Club.

“This tournament is such a big and prestigious event in Canadian Golf, and I know our small-town golf club is ready to shine. Whether it’s the players, the hundreds of dedicated member volunteers, or our exceptional Saugeen Golf Club team members, I can’t wait to see the outcome of their hard work and passion for the game of golf,” Alstein said.

Thursday also marked the opening day for Golf Fest in the Coors Light Gardens at Saugeen Golf Club with interactive games including a golf simulator, bucket golf, disc golf, the Port Elgin Chrysler Hole in One, beat the pro, food and beverages, a silent auction, plus live entertainment on the Bruce Power stage.

A full event pass for Golf Fest is $50 for non-members, $30 for members, $15 per day, and free for children 16 and under as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

On Friday ( Sept. 13) the second round of competition will be played throughout the day. Fans can walk and watch the golfers for free. Golf Fest continues with a special appearance by the Canadian Big Band in the evening as part of the Big Band Celebration, presented by Middleton Finner Financial Services. Tickets for the show are $25 per person.

On Saturday (Sept. 14) the third round will be played. Fans are invited to walk and watch the golfers for free.

Sunday ( Sept. 15) is championship day with the final tournament round played and a champion crowned in the afternoon. Fans can walk and watch the golfers for free. It is also the final day of Golf Fest in the Coors Light tent.
