The Ottawa Fusion Purple team earned the best local result with their fourth-place finish in the top-tier boys’ competition as Carleton University welcomed a total of 116 teams for Volleyball Canada’s 14-and-under national championships from May 3-5.
The Fusion went 5-1 on the first two days of competition and then overcame a first-set loss to upset the Maverick Bandits 19-25, 25-20, 15-11 in the quarter-finals before falling to Pakmen in the semis and Durham in the bronze medal match.
The Maverick Rattlers earned the top local finish on the girls’ side with their Tier 3 quarter-final appearance. A pair of Mavs girls’ teams’ Tier 7 tilt for the title provided another memorable moment as the Outlaws pulled out a 25-22, 10-25, 15-10 victory over the Raiders.
The Maverick Sidewinders also earned gold in Tier 10, while the Ottawa Fusion Purple (Tier 8) and Maverick Rascals (Tier 11) were silver medallists. The Lynx (Quebec) won the girls’ top division, while the Hazard (Ontario) were the top boys’ squad.
