RCMP in eastern New Brunswick are looking for a man described as armed and dangerous.

Police say they’re searching the region around Esgenoopetitj First Nation, about 37 kilometres east of Miramichi, for 47-year-old Keith Martin.

RCMP issued an emergency alert about the search naming Martin around 4 p.m.

Cpl. Hans Ouellette told Radio-Canada that officers were investigating an “incident with a firearm.” Ouellette told CBC News that police could not confirm any details because of the ongoing investigation.

Martin is described as having dark hair and was last seen wearing a grey jacket, jeans and black winter hat and carrying a bag. Police said he had a bandage and blood on his forehead.

Martin was last seen on Diggle Point Road, a dead-end road in Esgenoopetitj, travelling in a dark-coloured Hyundai Tucson with a Nova Scotia’s licence plate.

CBC News has attempted to contact members of the community to gather more details.

RCMP said anyone who sees Martin should call 911 immediately, but asked others to avoid calling 911 unless it is an emergency or related to the search for Martin.

“It’s important to keep police phone lines available for information related to locate Keith Martin,” RCMP said on social media.

Horizon Health Network said on social media at 7 p.m. that access to the Miramichi Regional Hospital is “restricted” as a precautionary measure because of the ongoing police operation.

“The emergency department will remain open, but social visitation is not encouraged at this time,” Horizon stated. “There will be an enhanced police and security presence on site. We will advise when access has returned to normal.”
