Days of rain showers will come to an end on Wednesday, but with a lingering thunderstorm threat that could impact parts of southern and eastern Ontario throughout the day.
Rumbles of thunder and periods of heavy rain hit the region late Tuesday night, with an approaching cold front set to trigger more scattered storms on Wednesday. There is the chance for some of these storms to become severe, with strong winds, heavy rain, and small hail the main risks.

The rain and storm risk will clear, making for a mostly sunny and warm end to the week. Temperatures will hover in the lower 20s on Thursday and Friday, sitting above normal for this late in September. Will the weekend stay clear? We’re closely watching Helene over the Gulf Coast.
Wednesday: Lingering showers with the chance for severe storms
An approaching cold front will trigger some scattered thunderstorms on Wednesday, with some more shower activity along the warm front draped across eastern Ontario.
Instability will be limited by cloud cover, and a late-September sun, so storms will likely be primarily non-severe in nature for most.
Across parts of central Ontario however, stronger storms could develop, possibly reaching severe criteria based on strong wind gusts. There is also the chance that some of those storms could even show some weak rotation.
Heavy rain will also be a factor in eastern areas that see thunderstorms, with 20-40 mm of rain possible with multiple rounds stormy conditions.
Warm and dry weekend, with eyes on Helene
A mix of sun and clouds is expected for this weekend, with warmer than normal temperatures, and potentially spectacular weather for the official first full weekend of fall. We will be closely watching the remnants of Helene however, which is expected to make landfall along the Gulf coast as a hurricane on Thursday.

Ontario should be spared in terms of disruptive tropical weather, but some high clouds with the chance of showers could be a factor at times.
There’s high confidence that temperatures will continue to float above normal to end off September, tracking within a couple degrees of seasonal within the first week of October.
