A 19-year-old Sikh woman working at a Walmart in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was found dead in a walk-in oven inside the store’s bakery. Halifax Regional Police (HRP) reported that they received a call about a sudden death at the Mumford Road Walmart location around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Authorities stated that the store, located in Halifax’s busy shopping district, was closed following the discovery and remains closed during the ongoing investigation. The woman, an employee of the Walmart store, had only recently relocated to Canada from India, seeking better opportunities. Her identity has not yet been disclosed by officials.

HRP has not yet released the cause or manner of death, and the investigation remains open, with police urging the public not to speculate. “The investigation is complex,” said Constable Martin Cromwell. “We understand the public is involved, and we just wanted to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be mindful that there are family members and coworkers involved.”

The Maritime Sikh Society confirmed the woman’s community ties, expressing condolences. Anmolpreet Singh, speaking for the society, stated, “It’s very sad for us, for her family as well, because she came for a better future and she lost her life.”

Walmart extends support, grief counseling to employees

In response to the incident, Walmart Canada has closed the store indefinitely while investigators continue their work. Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss confirmed that the company is providing 24/7 virtual care and on-site grief counseling to employees affected by the tragedy.

Labour department issues stop-work order for bakery

The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration issued a stop-work order for the bakery and specific equipment within the Walmart store. “We extend sympathies to the employee’s family at this incredibly difficult time,” the department stated, adding that workplace investigations are detailed processes that may take time to conclude.Police continue to work alongside local agencies, emphasizing the need for public restraint on social media. “We urge the public to be mindful of sharing speculative information on social media,” HRP noted in a statement on Tuesday.With the investigation underway, authorities and community members await more information as officials work to determine the cause of this tragic incident.
