S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the energy, industrial and technology sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 45.78 points at 24,931.16.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 140.33 points at 43,249.27. The S&P 500 index was up 5.08 points at 5,898.70, while the Nasdaq composite was up 78.62 points at 18,870.43.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.58 cents US compared with 71.21 cents US on Monday.

The January crude oil contract was down 19 cents at US$68.97 per barrel and the December natural gas contract was up less than a penny at US$2.98 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$13.70 at US$2,628.30 an ounce and the December copper contract was up a penny at US$4.13 a pound.
