The Calgary Stampeders face off against the Ottawa Redblacks in CFL action on Friday night.

The Stamps are fresh off an upset win against the Lions on Sunday and my CFL picks for this Week 8 showdown expect them to ride that momentum into the nation’s capital. Here are my Stampeders vs. Redblacks predictions and best bets for July 26.

My analysis
Both teams have faced many of the same opponents which gives us some interesting data points. The only difference in their schedule is that the Ottawa Redblacks faced the 0-6 Elks twice (both wins) while the Calgary Stampeders split a two-game set against the 5-2 Lions.

In their other four contests, these teams both split a home-and-away series against the Bombers while beating the Ti-Cats at home and losing to the Als on the road. While the Redblacks were clobbered by Montreal and edged Hamilton on a last-second field goal, the Stamps lost a close game against the Als and had a comfortable victory against the Ti-Cats.

Not only have the Stamps performed better against common opponents but they’ve gotten more consistent play at quarterback. Redblacks quarterback Dru Brown went off for 480 yards in Week 6 against Edmonton’s porous defense but he’s completed just 58.9% of his passes for 1,076 yards with three touchdowns and three picks in his other contests.

Calgary’s Jake Maier has made tremendous strides in his second year as a full-time starter. He was very sharp in his first two starts of the year and while he struggled in Week 5, that can happen when facing Montreal’s elite defense. He bounced back in the last two weeks, throwing for 623 yards and 9.9 YPA with five touchdowns and two interceptions.

With the Redblacks also last in the league in turnover margin (-6) and penalty yards (79.2 ypg), I don’t trust them in this spot.

Stampeders vs Redblacks same-game parlay (SGP)

Stampeders

Jake Maier Over 270.5 passing yards

Redblacks team total Under 25.5

Jake Maier has thrown for 300+ yards in his last two games and faces a mediocre and banged-up Redblacks secondary.

While he wasn’t able to push the ball downfield last season and struggled with turnovers, he’s been attacking vertically this year while significantly cutting down on his interceptions. Calgary’s offensive line has been excellent in pass protection and should give Maier enough time to pick apart Ottawa’s defense.

Despite exploding for 536 yards in Week 6, Ottawa’s offense is dead-last in the league with 5.41 yards per play. That Week 6 showdown is also the only time this season that the Redblacks scored more than 24 points. Calgary’s defense has struggled at times this year but is trending in the right direction after limiting BC’s top-rated offense on Sunday.

Stampeders vs Redblacks spread and Over/Under analysis

  • The Stampeders are playing on just four days of rest and could be in a letdown spot after upsetting the Lions in a 25-24 thriller on Sunday.
  • Between 2019 and 2023, the Redblacks went just 5-29 SU and 9-25 ATS at home but they’ve gone 3-0 SU and ATS at TD Place this season.
  • The Stamps are last in the CFL in sacks but they generated consistent pressure last week, forcing MOP favorite Vernon Adams Jr. into his worst performance of the year.
  • Ottawa is first in the league in big play returns (7) and has allowed the fewest (0) while Calgary has six big play returns of its own and has allowed the second-fewest (2).

Stampeders vs Redblacks trend
