A portion of Stittsville Main Street was closed Tuesday morning due to a nearby water main break.

Ottawa police said on social media shortly after 6 a.m. that the road was closed “due to a infrastructure failure” and asked motorists to avoid the area.

Coun. Glen Gower, who represents Stittsville, said the main thoroughfare was closed from Abbot Street East to Beverly Street, with buses and traffic being rerouted.

He said the water main break was between Mulkins Street and Andrew Alexander Court, and nearby residents and businesses might be without water for the day while crews located and repaired the damaged infrastructure.

Gower said city crews shut off the water before it could turn into a “sinkhole situation,” but added, “they have to open up the pavement, dig in, find where the break is and get it repaired.”

“Nearby residents and businesses may experience interruptions in water service today,” he said on social media.

By Tuesday afternoon, city crews had excavated a large hole in the middle of the street and located the break in the pipe, Gower said. Work was expected to continue into the evening, with nearby residents and businesses expected to be without water service until the work was complete.

“A big thank you to residents and businesses for your patience as this emergency work continues. And thank you to the city crews who are working hard on this hot day to complete the repairs and restore water service,” Gower said.
