Strictly’s Chris McCausland has ‘wobble’ in final week and shares daughter’s inspiring words

Must read

Strictly Come Dancing‘s Chris McCausland had a “wobble” ahead of Saturday’s final but he has been spurred on by his daughter’s encouragement.

The blind comedian is the favourite to win the Glitter Ball trophy on Saturday with his professional partner Dianne Buswell. Yet with just days until the final, the Strictly couple admitted they were in tears at the idea of the BBC show coming to an end.

The thought of their TV partnership coming to an end has already been very much on their minds and left them feeling emotional as the final looms. They go up against JB Gill, Sarah Hadland and Tasha Ghouri after Pete Wicks was sent home in the semi-final dance off.

Speaking at a press conference attended by Yahoo, Buswell explained: “Yesterday practising our dance, we had a little wobble. I saw Chris’ eyes glistening over. ‘Is he alright?’ I had a vision this will be our last dance on Saturday night. He said, ‘It makes me really sad.’

“Then he set me off. It will be sad. We spent so much time together. Over these last three months. Genuinely from the bottom of my heart, we will definitely keep in contact.”

McCausland and Buswell have won over many fans with their wit and banter. Bringing a sense of fun, Buswell joked: “If you [Chris] ever want a little whizz around… Then Lauren [Oakley]’s available. You can still do that any time you want.”

In all seriousness, she added: “It will be sad but we will keep in contact for sure.”

Their last dance on Strictly will be the Waltz to You’ll Never Walk Alone. “It’s an emotional song anyway,” McCausland said. “I just had this little thought the end of the dance being the end of everything we’ve done. It just gets me emotional.”

Supporting him every week at home has been his wife Patricia and 11-year-old daughter Sophie, both of whom mostly stay out of the limelight.

Once upon a time three and a half months ago, his daughter was “terrified” that the comedian was doing the BBC show. Fast forward to now, she has given her dad all the encouragement he needs ahead of Saturday as she told him: “I think you can win this thing.”

He shared: “She [my daughter] was terrified when I started this because I think she could pick up on my nerves and I couldn’t hide it. And she was so nervous for me, in case I fell over, in case it was embarrassing, I embarrassed myself.

“And as it’s gone on, she’s really got a lot better with it and she still throws cushions around with nerves before I go on and things like that. She’s 11. But she’s come to really look forward to it and enjoy it. And she started saying to me that she was really proud of what we’ve done and that ‘it doesn’t matter’, she’d say every Saturday, ‘It doesn’t matter, daddy if you go out because I think you’ve already won.’

“And then it was when we got to the semi-finals. She said, ‘Daddy, do you know what I said, it doesn’t matter? She said, ‘I’ve changed my mind. I think you can win this thing.'”
