Truro City boss John Askey says his side’s 2-1 victory at 10-man Welling United demonstrated their winning mentality.

Zain Walker put the hosts in front midway through the first half, but Jaze Kabia equalised seven minutes later as he pounced on a loose ball from Christian Oxlade-Camberlain’s long throw.

Tom Harrison headed in Kabia’s floated cross seven minutes later to secure the victory.

Dave Winfield was sent off for a second booking early in the second half as the hosts played out the game with 10 men.

“I think it showed that they’re used to winning,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

“So when we went a goal behind we didn’t panic, we just kept doing what we’ve been doing for the last few weeks and luckily today it’s gone for us.”

The win kept Truro second in National League South – they are level on points with new leaders Weston-super-Mare who have a game in hand and a superior goal difference.

Former leaders Eastbourne Borough drop to third, but like Truro have 31 points – they have played one game more and are nine goals worse off compared to the Cornish side.

“All the chances that were created were by us,” Askey added.

“The goal that they scored was a wicked deflection, I think it was going out for a corner and then it’s hit Will and gone in.

“But the players have done really well to respond from going 1-0 down, and to come back in the nature that they did shows a lot of character again.

“I was really pleased with how we played first half, second half we just had to see the game out really.”

2-1 win over welling

—————–

All the chances that were created were by us.

The goal that they scored was a wicked deflection, I think it was going out for a corner and then it’s hit Will and gone in.

But the players have done really well to respond from going 1-0 down, and to come back in the nature that he did shows a lot of character again.

I was really pleased with how we played first half, second half we just had to see the game out really.

We were unlucky not to have more goals, Jay’s in particular was really unlucky, one that bounced over the bar.

But it’s a good team performance and I think it showed that they’re used to winning, so when we went a goal behind we didn’t panic, we just kept doing what we’ve been doing for the last few weeks and luckily today it’s gone for us.

If you want to achieve something, then it does tend to test your mentality, and again the players have stood up to that and come away as deserved winners.

how far….

Who knows. We’ve just got to keep it going, keep our heads down. It’s still early days, so one thing is that the players are confident.

Luckily, at the moment we’ve not really had many injuries not too many suspensions, so we’ve been able to feel field a strong team every week.

I think the time will come when we get a little bit further down the line when we start to get one or two injuries and we need to bring more players in, and at the moment we are struggling to do that.

But the players that are playing are more than capable of achieving something.
