Tyler Allsopp projected to win provincial Bay of Quinte byelection

Must read

With 64 polls reporting, CBC projects that Progressive Conservative candidate Tyler Allsopp will be elected to represent Bay of Quinte in the Ontario legislature.

Seven people competed for the eastern Ontario seat, which was vacated by former education and energy minister Todd Smith last month after about 13 years of representing the Progressive Conservatives.

PC candidate Tyler Allsopp is a Belleville city councillor and business owner. His list of priorities included building more homes, widening Highway 401 and advocating against carbon taxes.

The Liberals put forward Sean Kelly, a Belleville city councillor and morning radio host. As MPP, he said he’d fight for affordable housing in the region and deal with the local opioid crisis.

The New Democratic Party candidate was Amanda Robertson, vice chair of a local school board. Lori Borthwick, a respiratory therapist, represented the Green Party of Ontario.

The riding includes part of Belleville south of Highway 401, all of Quinte West (including CFB Trenton) and all of Prince Edward County. Its population was just over 116,000 as of the 2021 census.

The legislature resumes Oct. 21.
