Juventus suffered their first defeat under Thiago Motta, as Danilo saw red and Mattia Perin saved a penalty, but ex-Atalanta striker El Billa Toure gave VfB Stuttgart a deserved victory.
The Bianconeri won both European games, including an incredible comeback 3-2 when down to 10 men away to RB Leipzig. Michele Di Gregorio was sent off in that match and therefore suspended, with Nico Gonzalez, Teun Koopmeiners, Gleison Bremer and Arek Milik injured. Douglas Luiz got hurt in the warm-up, making way for Khephren Thuram. VfB Stuttgart lost to Real Madrid and were held 1-1 by Sparta Prague, but had a lengthy absentee list including Chris Fuhrich, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Nikolas Nartey, Leonidas Stergiou and Luca Raimund. On top of that, Wahid Faghir, Justin Diehl, Ramon Hendriks, Nick Woltemade and Stefan Drljaca are ineligible for this competition.
See how it unfolded on the Liveblog.
Josha Vagnoman’s header drifted wide of the back post, as did the Nicolò Fagioli free kick, but Ermedin Demirovic sprung the offside trap on a smart through ball and saw his low drive fingertipped onto the inside of the near post by Mattia Perin on 29 minutes.
Perin had to arch his back at full stretch to fingertip a looping Deniz Undav header out from under the bar after the splendid Angelo Stiller ball over the top.
VfB Stuttgart had the better of the first half and had the ball in the net within seconds of the restart. However, Undav’s strike into the bottom corner was disallowed by VAR for a handling offence.
Perin flew to palm the ferocious Demirovic scorcher over the bar, then moments later had to fingertip a Enzo Millot solo attempt round the base of the near post.
Thuram saw his effort from the edge of the area cleared almost off the line by Jeff Chabot, while Vagnoman had to make a decisive interception to stop Kenan Yildiz tapping in the Tim Weah cross at the back post.
Danilo caught Roualt on the thigh with a late challenge, so the referee awarded a penalty and the Juventus veteran’s second yellow card following the VAR On-Screen Review. However, Perin – standing in for suspended Di Gregorio – palmed the Millot penalty out of the near bottom corner.
VfB finally did take the lead in stoppages, as former Atalanta striker Toure completed a give and go with Millot to burst into the box and beat Perin from a tricky angle.
