A group of 16 folk singers from Chernivtsi, Ukraine, will stop in Nanaimo during a cross-Canada tour raising money to support families affected by war.
Gerdan Theatre looks to unite communities with culture, backed by more than 30 years of research dedicated to preserving and sharing Ukrainian folk music.
“We are excited and honoured to embark on this tour,” said Anastasiia Kostiuk, artistic director of Gerdan Theatre. “Our goal is to share the soul of Ukraine with Canada, its music, stories and spirit, at a time when cultural exchange is more important than ever.”
According to a news release from Kazka Entertainment, the performers are well-known around the world as the “unique, powerful and progressive theatre that makes everyone fall in love with Ukrainian culture.”
The Canadian tour is called Never Mind the Nigh and includes music, storytelling and ritual. Performers also showcase vintage costumes collected through years in folklore expeditions.
“Everything about Gerdan is authentic, energetic and straight from the heart,” the release noted.
The tour began in September and the group will perform in 40 Canadian cities. The group will perform at St. Andrew’s United Church in Nanaimo on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at http://eventbrite.com. The show will also stop on Salt Spring Island on Nov. 30 and Victoria on Dec. 1.
