In the second singles, Taylor Fritz, who reached the final of the US Open in September, took a solid start against Felix Auger-Aliassime, leading by a set and a break for the Canadian bounced back to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to send the tie into the mixed doubles.
In a match that ended at 12:54 AM local time, Gauff and Fritz came through 7-6(2), 7-5 over Auger-Aliassime and Fernandez to give the Americans the win.
“Really happy with how we played today in the mixed,” Gauff said as quoted by the United Cup website. “I felt we got better the longer the match went. We had a lot of chances and finally we were able to stick ’em when it mattered.”
“After the way I lost my singles match it would have been really tough to go home today with a mixed doubles loss today as well,” Fritz said. “Thank you Coco for carrying the team and we got it done.”
This is the first tie of the 2025 United Cup for the American team while Canada had defeated Croatia in their opening tie.
