The 32-year-old will occupy a Designated Player spot and add some veteran depth to the Vanni Sartini’s midfield options down the stretch this season.
Armstrong most recently played for Southampton in the EFL Championship, where he helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League.
Across all competitions, Armstrong has made more than 100 appearances for Dundee United, Celtic, and Southampton.
The Whitecaps currently sit fifth in Western Conference, though they have up to three games in hand on some of their rivals.
