Must read

Canada will play Hungary in the opening round of the 2025 Davis Cup competition, and Vasek Pospisil has once again made the team.

Now three years removed from their first Davis Cup triumph, Canada will be looking to lift one of tennis’ oldest trophies a second time.

The Davis Cup Qualifiers are set to take place in early February, and Canada has announced their team.

Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil will be joined by Denis Shapovalov, Gabriel Diallo, Alexis Galarneau and Liam Draxl for the tie.

Canada will face Hungary, which boasts two players in the top 100 of the ATP rankings: Fabian Marozsan (#57) and Marton Fuscovics (#100).

“We are very excited to be coming back to Montreal with such a strong team for this year’s Davis Cup Qualifiers,” said captain Frank Dancevic. “While we know that Hungary has some very talented players, we feel extremely confident that this team will get the job done and get us one step closer to the Davis Cup Final 8. Last year, winning our Qualifier tie at IGA Stadium was something special, and we look forward to another opportunity to play in front of the passionate Montreal crowd.”

Pospisil has been selected to the team for the 29th time, second-most in the country’s history. His cumulative record at the competition stands at 32 wins and 27 losses.

The tie will take place at Montreal’s IGA Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 1, with two singles matches. The next day will see a doubles match followed by two more singles matches. The winner will face off against Austria or Finland in the second round, set for September 2025.
