Younghoe Koo’s FG with 2 seconds left gives Falcons 26–24 win over Saints

Must read

Younghoe Koo‘s 58-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the game gave the Atlanta Falcons a 26–24 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 4. With the win, the Falcons and Saints are both 2–2 in the NFC South.

Alvin Kamara‘s 1-yard touchdown run with one minute remaining put the Saints on top, 24–23. That finished off a nine-play, 42-yard drive that began with a 32-yard pass from Derek Carr to Chris Olave. Carr completed five more passes in the series, advancing New Orleans an additional 51 yards down the field.

Yet with 0:58 seconds left, Atlanta had just enough time to drive for a winning field goal from its 30-yard line. The Falcons faced a second-and-10 after a false start penalty on center Ryan Neuzil, but then got the big play they needed with a pass interference call on Paulson Adebo. That resulted in a 30-yard gain.

Atlanta tried to get closer but after Kirk Cousins threw three consecutive incompletions, there was no choice but to attempt a long kick for the win. Koo made all four of his field-goal attempts for all the points the Falcons’ offense could generate.

Overall, Cousins threw for 238 yards on 21-of-35 passing with one interception. Drake London led the Falcons with 64 yards receiving on six receptions, joined by Darnell Mooney‘s 56 yards on three catches. Tyler Allgeier rushed for 60 yards on eight carries.

Atlanta’s other 14 points came on turnovers.

The first occurred when Rashid Shaheed muffed a punt early in the first quarter. Shaheed let the ball bounce off his facemask attempting to make an over-the-shoulder catch at the Saints’ 3-yard line. He tried to retrieve the live ball in the end zone but after a scramble, the Falcons’ KhaDarel Hodge recovered it for a touchdown.

Atlanta added a defensive score midway through the second quarter when Troy Andersen intercepted Carr at the Saints’ 47 for a 47-yard pick-6.

Carr completed 28 of 36 pass attempts for 239 yards and that interception. Olave finished with 87 yards on eight receptions, while Shaheed added 83 yards with another eight catches. Kamara rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries with a score, with Taysom Hill getting two touchdowns among his six carries.

Up next for the Falcons is another NFC South matchup against the first-place Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3–1) on Thursday night (5:15 p.m. ET, Amazon Prime). The Saints travel to Kansas City next Monday to face the Chiefs (5:15 p.m., ESPN).
