The United States women’s national team bagged a friendly win over Iceland thanks to two late goals from two substitutes.

Scorers: Thompson 39′, Shaw 86′, Smith 89′ ; Magnúsdóttir 56′

It was all U.S. from the opening whistle, but they did little to capitalize on their early domination with some loose passes in the final third.

Their control finally paid off in the dying minutes of the first-half when Alyssa Thompson popped up with her first international goal, and a fantastic goal at that.

But Emma Hayes’ side came out flat after the half-time break, and it did not take long for Iceland to pounce on the drop in energy from the home side.

Seemingly looking to show up Thompson for her first-half stunner, Selma Sól Magnúsdóttir showed off a rocket of her own when she cut inside and leathered the ball into the top corner to level the score.

While Iceland looked all but set to hold on for a gutsy draw in the states, Jaedyn Shaw came off the bench to win it late for the home side and raise the roof at Q2 Stadium.

The icing on the cake came when Sophia Smith left her mark on the game with a late goal to wrap up the win in style for the Olympic champions.
