Portugal overcome Czech Republic by a narrow margin
Scorers: Silva 13, 76′; Svitková 35′ (PEN)
A brace from Diana Silva saw Portugal through by a 2-1 win on the night and a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
Francisco Neto’s side opened the scoring early on when Joana Marchão put in a perfectly weighted cross from the left-hand side, allowing striker Diana Silva to deliver the headed finish.
With the score from the first leg poised at 1-1, this put the Portuguese ahead in the tie overall, but Czech Republic soon hit back when they were awarded a penalty for a handball in the area, which was then tucked away by Katerina Svitková.
With time ticking away, Portugal regained the lead as Silva fired in her second of the night, this time with a superb volley to put her side in the driving seat.
It was not to be for Czech Republic as they went home empty handed, while Portugal took the qualifying spot.
Norway run up huge scoreline over Northern Ireland
Scorers: Graham Hansen 13′, Maanum 47′, Jensen 78′
Northern Ireland were sent crashing out of contention for a place in EURO 2025 as Norway added a 3-0 win to make an aggregate score of 7-0.
In truth, Tanya Oxtoby’s side had a mountain to climb to qualify for the tournament after that 4-0 first leg defeat.
And the tie was effectively over when Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen opened the scoring after just 13 minutes, showing her tricky footwork inside the penalty area and shooting low across goal to beat Jackie Burns with a fairly tame effort.
Norway doubled their lead on the night only two minutes into the second half, when Frida Maanum stole possession from Rebecca McKenna on the edge of the area and supplied the finish at the near post.
Northern Ireland still have some way to go to reach the level required, with Norway easing through to take their place in next summer’s tournament.
Scotland disappoint after succumbing to Finland
Scorers: Kuikka 8′, Lehtola 28′
Finland knocked Scotland out of the EURO 2025 qualifying process, with a 2-0 win at the Bolt Arena in Helsinki.
This was effectively a straight knockout game, as the two sides had cancelled each other out with a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the tie.
After 90 minutes without a goal in the first game, Finland scored after just eight minutes in the second leg when Natalia Kuikka let fly with a shot from distance that had goalkeeper Eartha Cumings scrambling in vain.
Scotland rallied, but just as they were pushing for the equaliser, they took a throw in too quickly and Finland were able to double their advantage when Nea Lehtola’s shot took a deflection off Sophie Howard and wrongfooted Cumings.
Pedro MartÃnez Losa’s side could not find a response, leaving Scotland disappointed not to reach the tournament.
Ireland v Wales
The tournament itself kicks off next summer in Switzerland, with matches taking place throughout July.
